  • Kate's Classroom during Cancer Treatments

    Funded Jul 18, 2023

I cannot thank you enough for your support in getting my classroom set up for the upcoming school year. I actually received news from my doctor that I would be missing the first couple weeks to undergo radiation treatments so having materials already there and set up for the substitute that will be watching over my students before I have the chance to meet them. Your support has been immense and this note of thanks will never be able to express just how thankful I am.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Puckett

  • Kate's Quest for Graphic Novels

    Funded Jan 4, 2022

I am beyond excited to see this project funded! I told my students that they were getting new books and the looks on their faces were priceless. I am bursting with gratitude for you all and cannot thank you enough. Pictures to come of the impact your donations will have.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Puckett

Every day, we have 30 minutes of independent reading time. However, actually getting students to read has been a struggle. There are many who, with time, have fallen in love with reading again but generally the idea of sitting still and moving their eyes across a page for 30 whole minutes both terrifies and frustrates them. That is until I brought in some graphic novels from home. I pulled books from my shelf and matched them with students I thought would be interested in them and I saw students actually reading. They actually comprehended what was going on and they were proud of themselves for finishing something. I would love to get more graphic novels for my classroom and enough so that I can match every student with a new book! These kids are struggling with basic literacy but I think graphic novels are the gateway to get them reading again.
