This is my first year teaching third grade at a new school. I had been teaching 4th graders for the last 8 years at another school. There, I used novel sets to teach reading. I found this a much more engaging way to teach the reading standards. My school district, Chicago Public Schools, has transitioned to a new reading curriculum this year. The curriculum is well thought out and will be good; however, we are 1/3 of the way through the year and I still don’t have all of the materials necessary to teach Reading. I’d like this novel set to supplement with rich instruction until my materials come in. It’s also an excellent book that I know my students will enjoy reading.
