My students love coming to school to learn about the world around them. Each and every day, my students discover new things through reading, writing, drawing. Being kindergartners, routine and organization is a key to their success in the classroom. My Baltimore City Kindergartners use what they can to do their best, but deserve so much more than they actually have. My focus for the school year is to have more individualized instruction through small groups every day. In order to be successful, the kids have to work independently while small group instruction is taking place. The class will have to be organized so there are no distractions during this important time. I need to find ways to make the small group instruction a seamless, everyday expectation. My small group instruction time is 45 minutes for literacy and 15 minutes for math. I group my students according to how they are performing in class and what they need. When I meet with my groups, the children come to my large table where I need the stools on my wishlist. Students need small group instruction so I can zone in on individual students to review information, catch students up on lessons, or even challenge students. While I am working on skills with my groups, the other students need to be independent at their seats. They need to know what they are supposed to do and where to get the materials they need. I plan to use the chair organizer to keep individual supplies readily available for each student. Storage containers and student mailboxes will also help students to thrive independently as they will know what to do and where to get their supplies.
