The donation of these classroom science gardening/horticulture materials and supplies will enable me to set up an indoor science grow lab environment in the classroom. The students I teach have severe/multiple disabilities and live in one of the poorest socio-economic areas of the United States (the South Bronx). This indoor classroom "gardening grow laboratory" will provide unique hands-on opportunities for my students (many of which never have had the chance to go to a garden/park/or farm) and often do not know where vegetables/fruits/herbs come from - or how they grow. The students will learn the growing process/life cycle of many herbs and vegetable - as they learn to plant seeds and cultivate them under grow lights and in planting pots. In the spring term, when the weather warms up, the students will participate in transplanting many herb and vegetable seedlings into a designated outdoor garden area adjacent to the school. The student will learn how to grow a variety of vegetables and herbs (from seed to plate), and ultimately, the goal is for the students to harvest the vegetables and herbs in late spring/summer session - and, enjoy eating healthy salads/meals. It is my belief that the students will learn best by participating in hands-on lessons and will overcome the challenges of their learning disabilities by being motivated to grow their own healthy food!
