So many of the books we traditionally read in an English class are by white, male authors. In an effort to bring diversity to my students, I want to do literature circles, where students can choose books written by authors that might look like them or might look different than traditional authors--from Asian-American authors like Gene Yang to African-American poets like Amanda Gorman. This project brings the gift of literacy to my students, and they will be able to read authors whose perspectives are not always the loudest. These books will help give my students voice.
