My students struggle with basic needs (like cleanliness and hygiene) as well as trauma, poverty, homelessness and transiency. The items I selected will create a supportive, inviting atmosphere for when they come to my room to talk about the challenges they're facing, or when they are sent out of class for behavioral issues. These items include books, activities, motivational posters, and tools/games to teach about emotions and coping skills, boost their self-esteem, and inspire and motivate them to learn and persist despite their hardships. They also include hygiene items like deodorant and lotion, headphones to help them focus and destress in my room, and lastly I included three scooters to help a family that struggles with getting to school each day because they have a far walk. My students amaze me each day with their resilience and desire to connect, despite all the hardships, transiency and poverty they are facing. My students are longing for a place of calm, where they can learn coping skills and responsibility, and build their self-esteem and sense of belonging. With these items, I hope to boost the support I can give them.
