In Music Therapy, percussion instruments are commonly used as a way of self-expression. All students can find success when playing the drum due to its accessibility. Music Therapists use the ISO-Principle, meeting the students where they are, to match and re-shape behaviors. Having a drum set will allow them a safe outlet to express their emotions appropriately and give them the opportunity to regulate themselves through music-making. With the opportunity to pick up drum sticks during the school day, student voices will be heard! The students currently use small percussive instruments to aid in the process of self-expression through music mainly using fine motor skills. With the drumset, they will be able to engage their whole body in the music-making process. Cross-modal learning allows the students to process more information which then helps them become more comfortable with a higher stimulus. The more cross-modal learning these students receive the better they will become at processing their own emotions appropriately. The students cannot wait to have the drumset and sticks in their hands!
