Novels to Devour
Funded Nov 29, 2023I would like to take this opportunity to send my heartfelt gratitude to the donors of my project. Since the Pandemic, my goal has been to build a physical library of books that encourage students to read on a daily basis. With input from them, I chose the titles for this project. As a result, when the books arrived, the students were overjoyed and extremely eager to devour the new additions.
Students have been reading, discussing, recommending, and sharing the books ever since. As a teacher, I find this thrilling. As a lover of books, this touches my heart. I cannot tell you how much this project's funding has meant to my classroom. It has only made the culture of reading stronger. Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Peck

Funded Dec 7, 2022I am so grateful for the books added to our classroom library. It was practically Christmas morning in Community 6 the day they were added to the bookshelves. The students have greatly enjoyed the texts!
In our classroom, we begin the day with Sustained Silent Reading. Students are able to read whatever they'd like, and this has really helped turn non-readers into students who enjoy reading. I have a large African American population, so the books about Juneteenth, black scientists, black women, and black heroes were hits! The novels that featured African Americans as the main characters, such as Swim Team, were also popular. I also enjoyed the students making choices to read about people from other cultures as well. Students learned about Frida Kahlo, Pele, and Malala Yousafzai, too! Needless to say, the nonfiction books were as popular as the fiction ones. The books stayed with the students until they completed reading--they could read after finishing work or during free time. The books were devoured!
In the end, the books donated actually touched more than just my class. Students from the other two 5th grade classes borrowed books. Once the word got around about all of the new books, the 6th graders (my students from last year) would visit me and borrow books. I had fourth graders ask for books as well, and some used the books for a biography project. Even a few third graders asked to choose from the bookshelf. This made my reading heart so happy!
Again, THANK YOU so much for your generosity. It has been such a blessing to our classroom and school!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Peck
