Many of my students in special education struggle with mental math and organizing the solutions place values of products and quotients. Teaching them how to use the calculator builds their math skills and their desire to work through math problems that in the past felt impossible. Calculators allow students who take a long time to calculate for solutions a chance to focus on multiple steps and operations that word problems require. The calculators will be used to help students solve ratios and understand the concepts of turning fractions into percent, percent into fractions, fractions in to decimals, and decimals into fractions.
