  • Creating a Space for Healing and Growth

    I worked with individual students in therapy sessions, so I cannot take pictures of that, but I want you to know that the gifts for the therapy room have had a huge impact. In addition to that, we joined forces for Orange County Department of Education to create mental health and wellbeing campaigns in March where we used many of the items to help bring mental health education to more students at our school.

    In therapy sessions, the items help teach coping skills, process traumas, and emotions. When the students first see the items, they are drawn to them which helps build rapport. Many of our students have had to grow up too fast, so being able to reconcile childhood behaviors with the items, has brought a great deal of healing to my students.

    In the mental health campaigns we were able to bring education to all students at our campus. During the first event, the leadership students created posters and had a booth with engaging information on them. We shared the items and showed them how to use these especially during difficult moments. During our TUPE campaign, we used the items to show them how they can use healthy coping skills and avoid things like vaping and tobacco, which can influence poor mental health.

My focus is to reduce the social-emotional stressors that interfere with students' education. These materials allow me to use my expertise to the fullest by using interventions that require additional materials besides talk, such as play therapy, experiential therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Many of these students have trauma history and in order to process some of this in session, we have to get creative about telling stories. Different approaches allow students to cope and heal. I know that these contributions will help many children for years to come. Thank you.
