Funded Feb 9, 2022Thank you so much for the books that you donated to our class. My students are really enjoying the books. In my class, we have daily read alouds, in which I read a story out loud to the students and ask them comprehension questions that are focused to address areas of need. Many of my students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and have not had opportunities to travel, visit museums or participate in extracurricular activities that expose them to new vocabulary and provide background knowledge that is helpful in comprehending text. During read aloud time, I work to address these deficits.
In my classroom, we have a nice cozy reading corner with comfortable chairs and pillows and lots and lots of books. This is where I read books allowed to the students and also where they are able to read books on their own for pleasure. In addition, we have focused, guided reading instruction that takes place at their desks with district approved curriculum.
Sometimes it can be hard to get middle school students motivated to read, but your kind donations brought us many books that are very appealing to them. We now have a wide selection of graphic novels, books that are of high interest but geared for individuals with lower ability levels in reading and books that are racially diverse and have characters that look like my students.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Roman
