  • Snacks for Hungry Middle Schoolers

    Funded Aug 25, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donation. With a later lunch hour this year, my students get hungry mid morning and they are able to focus on their studies and perform better academically when they have a snack. They will be greatly appreciative of your donation, just as I am.”

Thank you so much. Supplies are running low this time of year and it is such a relief to have gracious donors like you to keep our classroom running smoothly for the duration of the school year. I Can not thank you enough for helping fund public education in West Phoenix.”

  • School Supplies

    Funded Aug 26, 2022

My students are so excited about the new books in our classroom library. They ask me to read these books aloud to them on a regular basis, as well as picking them up to read independently during choice time.

The games have been a real hit for days when we finish testing or have a break in our normal schedule. I also use them to motivate students to complete their work by promising them a little bit of playtime at the at the end of the week.

I am so grateful for your generous donation. I used to purchase these types of materials out of my own pocket and it is really nice to have such a wonderful donors and a great program like Donors Choose to help keep the out of pocket costs down for teachers like me.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Roman

  • Read About Me to Me!

    Funded Feb 9, 2022

Thank you so much for the books that you donated to our class. My students are really enjoying the books. In my class, we have daily read alouds, in which I read a story out loud to the students and ask them comprehension questions that are focused to address areas of need. Many of my students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and have not had opportunities to travel, visit museums or participate in extracurricular activities that expose them to new vocabulary and provide background knowledge that is helpful in comprehending text. During read aloud time, I work to address these deficits.

In my classroom, we have a nice cozy reading corner with comfortable chairs and pillows and lots and lots of books. This is where I read books allowed to the students and also where they are able to read books on their own for pleasure. In addition, we have focused, guided reading instruction that takes place at their desks with district approved curriculum.

Sometimes it can be hard to get middle school students motivated to read, but your kind donations brought us many books that are very appealing to them. We now have a wide selection of graphic novels, books that are of high interest but geared for individuals with lower ability levels in reading and books that are racially diverse and have characters that look like my students.”

    With gratitude,

  • Reading and Writing about Us

    Funded Mar 12, 2022

Thank you so much for supporting my students. They love listening to books and are excited to learn about topics that they can relate to. I can already see the smiles on their faces when we receive all of this amazing literature. We are so grateful for opportunities like these to enrich our classroom library. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

I teach students who are differently abled. Some have mild intellectual disabilities, physical impairments such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida, speech and language impairments, or attention deficit disorder. My students are significantly behind in reading and therefore I used a structured, phonics program to guide the majority of our instruction. However, I incorporate a listening comprehension piece where I read aloud to the students everyday. This is everybody's favorite part of class. They absolutely love it and we need good quality literature that they can relate to. I want them to be able to see themselves in the stories that we read.
