Having rich texts in the hands of my students means everything. They benefit so much from engaging books. I love this book and I know my students will too. Letting students use their own copy in class increases engagement and provide a portal to another world. This book teaches about World War II and Japan, both are topics many of my students will be unfamiliar with when we begin. But as we follow this heartbreaking story my students will learn about history, another culture, and the evils of cancer. Folding paper cranes is always an amazing culminating activity that has so much more meaning after we've read this book.
