This is my first year teaching in the nation's capital; however, I have several years of teaching experience that includes working with students of different backgrounds, demographics & populations. I have taught in both traditional & non traditional settings, as well as a Juvenile Detention Center, so I am well-prepared for the challenges that come along with the teaching profession; however, the "back-to-school season" remains a challenge that I, like many teachers, simply cannot undertake as a solo mission.
Back-to-School season is usually the one of the most expensive & stressful times of the year for schools & communities; however, the absence of basic school supplies & classroom decor creates a very melancholic & challenging tone for the school year.
I would absolutely love to be able to have supplies for every student and classroom decor that would enhance creativity, promote positive thinking & inspire hope. A classroom printer & copy paper are important parts of education; however, I do not have a classroom printer & I am only allotted ONE box of printing paper per school year. A printer would allow students to see & feel projects that they have worked so diligently to create. Additionally, having access to a classroom printer would save time by giving students a digital resource that would be used to increase comprehension & learning outcomes. Since I don't have a working SmartBoard, dry eraser markers are imperative to my classroom in helping to share & convey information to my students. Dry erase markers along with color pencils, construction paper & glue sticks would not only help to facilitate colorful lessons but they would be a resource to help to promote an interactive, hand-on learning experience for my students. Finally, classroom would benefit from having a larger bin to dispose of trash.
