Our students currently read and write on a flat desk. When the angle of vision changes the letters and numbers change in shape. The students' brains work harder to interpret what they are reading and writing, which causes them to omit, substitute, and insert words that are not in the passage or on the writing task. Results also include fatigue, reduced comprehension, writing complete complex sentences, and the inability to solve math equations appropriately. Benefits of using a slant board for reading. When the student uses a slant board the letters/numbers remain consistent therefore allowing the brain to decode only one set of symbols, which is beneficial in increasing comprehension and minimal fatigue. Our students also use this same flat desk to write. I have observed these students when writing or copying from the board omit words, letters, and numbers written in reverse or the word is not legible. Research states that the wrist muscles become strained and less controlled when writing on a flat surface. Benefits of using a slant board for writing. When the student uses a slant board the arm is raised resulting in better penmanship. The slant board will also have a clip to hold the paper allowing the student to focus on the writing task and instead of distractions of the paper moving out of place or even falling on the floor. By providing these tools (Visual Edge Slant Board and pencil grips ) the second graders will have the ultimate tools to aid in their learning for better comprehension and writing.
