I did not set out to start a book club, a book club found me! I work in a rural school district teaching struggling readers in grades K-2 as a special educator. Reading is hard for my students, and most of them do not enjoy reading group because it is hard work! You can imagine my surprise when three of my BOYS asked me if they could stay after school to...READ. The answer could only be, Yes. We start next week. At our first club, I told the students our club was going to be cooler than Oprah's. Crickets. I asked, "Who knows who Oprah is?" One hand shoots confidently into the air. Cue the blonde girl in the front, "I don't know Oprah, but my mom makes okra and I like it!" Oh boy. This is going to be fun. What started as an idea to keep a few students after school once a week quickly turned into an open invitation to all second grade students to join a club where we could discuss literature, celebrate books, and yes, have a cookie. I hope to give my students their own copy of the book they voted to read, "Sideways Stories From Wayside School" so they can follow along during club, read with their family at home, and have a memory in the form a book that will last well into adulthood.
