  • Gifts for Reading

    Funded Nov 26, 2024

Reading in my classroom is a journey of discovery, critical thinking, and engagement. We don't just read books—we dive into them, analyzing characters, making predictions, and connecting stories to our own lives. The I Survived books, for example, help students build comprehension skills by identifying key details, understanding cause and effect, and making inferences. These historical fiction texts also spark curiosity about real-world events, leading to meaningful discussions and deeper learning.

In our classroom, reading happens in many ways—independent reading for enjoyment, small group discussions for collaboration, and whole-class read-alouds that model fluency and expression. Many of my students don't have access to books at home, so providing them with engaging, high-interest books is essential to building their love for reading.

One student, in particular, has been especially captivated by the I Survived series. At the beginning of the year, he struggled to find books that interested him, but now he eagerly reaches for the next I Survived book, excited to learn about historical events through the eyes of relatable characters. Seeing his confidence and enthusiasm grow has been incredible, and it's all thanks to donors like you who make these books possible!”

  • Thriving In My Teaching Trio, Year 3!

    Funded Aug 7, 2023

We're incredibly excited about the new classroom resources our donors have provided, specifically a set of interactive whiteboards. These whiteboards have opened up new possibilities for our teaching and learning experiences.

One specific project we're currently working on involves enhancing our interactive lessons in mathematics. When our students first saw these whiteboards, they were amazed by the technology and the opportunity to engage with their lessons in a more interactive way. The excitement in the classroom was palpable, and they eagerly participated in the demonstration of how the whiteboards work.

Our donors' support has been invaluable in making this project possible, and we're deeply appreciative of their contributions. To keep our donors involved and informed, we plan to create video clips showcasing our students using the whiteboards during lessons. We'll also invite donors to virtual classroom sessions where they can see the whiteboards in action and interact with our students during lessons.

In our current classroom lessons, the next steps involve fully integrating the whiteboards into our daily curriculum. We'll be using them to facilitate dynamic math lessons, encouraging students to solve problems collaboratively and share their work in real-time. These whiteboards will also allow us to adapt our teaching methods and offer personalized instruction to meet the unique needs of each student. We're confident that these new resources will greatly enhance our students' learning experiences and help them excel in mathematics and beyond.”

  • Books Books and More BOOKS!

    Funded May 9, 2023

Introducing new texts and teaching books can encompass a wide range of essential skills and lessons for readers of all levels. These lessons go beyond the words on the page and aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of literature. For instance, readers can develop comprehension skills by summarizing, making predictions, and drawing inferences from the text. Additionally, vocabulary expansion is encouraged by exploring unfamiliar words and phrases in context. Critical thinking is nurtured through discussions about themes, character motivations, and the author's purpose, while more advanced readers can delve into literary analysis by examining elements like symbolism and figurative language. Writing skills are also closely linked to reading, as readers can respond to what they've read through various writing exercises. Furthermore, fostering cultural and historical awareness is possible through books, offering readers the opportunity to explore diverse perspectives and contexts.

In our classroom, we often incorporate silent reading time, group discussions, teacher-led readings, and literature circles. We also identify students who are particularly enjoying the new books by observing their enthusiasm for discussions, their willingness to explore related topics or their noticeable improvements in reading skills and comprehension. By tailoring book choices to individual preferences and interests, we aim to enhance their enjoyment of reading and foster a lifelong love for literature among all our learners. Thank you for your donations!”
