My scholars all work hard each and every day to meet their end-of-year math goals. Our school improvement focus this year is on mathematics, and every one of my scholars has the ability to test on-level in our state test at the end of the year. In order to close achievement gaps and to make sure that every scholar is performing at or above grade level in mathematics, I have met with my scholars to set goals. These could be things like understanding place value relationships, fact fluency, computational fluency, or general number sense. Each scholar has a year-end goal, but we also progress-monitor many times throughout the year, and make observations daily during small-group math time, to make sure scholars are progressing toward skills mastery. When they reach these smaller monthly, weekly, or sometimes daily goals, we like to reward them with a small token to show them we are proud and that their hard work has paid off. This aligns with our whole-school PBIS plan, and helps motivate students to work toward goals. With this project, I'd like to start a 'reward bin' with Smarties candies (for our Math Smarties!) and Starburst candies (for Star Student Work!), as well as small animal-shaped erasers. Students will choose from these items when they meet a daily, weekly, or monthly math goal.
