Recess Refresh
Funded Oct 28, 2022WOW! What an amazing year we have had so far in PE! Much of that is due to your incredible generosity in funding our Recess Refresh project.
When we received the equipment in the beginning of November, our students were overjoyed! They were so excited to have equipment to use while playing outside in our school yard. The biggest hits were the basketballs and soccer balls! Due to the weather and some lunch staff shortages, we currently are not using the equipment at recess. However, I am hopeful we can begin to use it outdoors again in the upcoming weeks.
We have also been using the equipment in our PE classes. The foam frisbees allowed our 4th & 5th grade students to safely participate in a frisbee unit for the first time. Our 2nd & 3rd graders used the small yellow rubber all purpose balls in a throwing & catching unit.
Today, our students in grades 2-5 all began a volleying unit. I am excited to put the net together, we will likely begin using that next week. I just finished inflating all of our new practice volleyballs to use!
This equipment has provided so many incredible learning opportunities so far! We are so grateful for your kindness in helping us to get this equipment. We will continue to cherish this equipment and the learning opportunities they are providing us with for the years to come. Thank you again for everything!”

Nutrition Expedition
Funded Apr 15, 2022It has been a few months since our Nutrition Expedition was funded. I am excited to share with you that the resources provided have been so impactful in supporting students with Nutrition Education. Because of your generous support, our students since have learned to read a nutrition label, developed a better understanding of portion size, and can identify the food groups. Students have also enjoyed using the resources in PE class for games that supplement their Nutrition Education. A fan favorite game we came up with is called "Fill Your Plate". Relay race style, students take turns turning over cones and collecting the pictures of food hiding underneath. The first group with a balanced plate wins the round.
When I first received the resources last year, I put them on display in the cafeteria for students to read at their leisure during lunch time. I was pleasantly surprised when students from all grades, even the ones I don't teach, approached me to make comments or ask questions about the posters. They were UP IN ARMS about the Portion Size Wise poster when they first saw it! Many students could not accept the idea of only eating four chicken nuggets.
These resources are currently on display outside our gym and will be used again for our Nutrition Unit later this year. So far this year, we have been focusing on cooperative activities and aerobic fitness. I am excited to continue sharing our PE journey with you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Pirone
