I have been teaching for 18 years and this is by far the hardest year of my career! Of course everyone's first year is a huge challenge, and last year being virtual offered new obstacles. I didn't think it could get any harder. I was excited, eager and hopeful to resume in-person school. If something positive could come from Covid. It would finally be the attention to Social-Emotional learner needs, reduced class sizes, and building relationships. The truth is trauma is not new for my students; we work in a high-needs community that is sadly underserved. I am a teacher but also a child advocate. Between staff shortages, a lack of resources, and the current state of the world, something has to give. I have decided to take a professional sabbatical to learn how to bring real change to myself, my students, my school, and community. It's hard to step back, but I'm confident my only regret will not be doing this sooner. Thank you for the opportunity to join Breathe 4 Change .
