  • The Kindness Club

    Funded Dec 14, 2021

I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and support for the Kindness Club at Gold River Discovery Center. The members of the Kindness Club were so excited about the paint materials generously donated by you. As a result, students have experienced fruitful discussions, camaraderie, and awareness about learning to understand and respect cultural, religious, and gender differences.

Students created ideas and designs to share with others on our school campus by developing themes, words, and designs on sneakers. After several zoom meetings with the director of the Canvas Project (@canvasco.shop), students learned about the preparation and paint process for creating unique and message-driven sneakers. The creativity displayed by these middle school students was indeed phenomenal, and students are looking forward to making more sneakers in the upcoming school year. Without your well-wishes and support, this program would not have been possible.

We can now grow and expand upon the sneaker design-making process to share messages of hope, love, and kindness. We are spreading the message throughout campus and will conduct a fundraiser to raise money for the Trevor Project. This project will begin in the fall with a raffle of sneakers to support this foundation. Thanks again for sharing with our students. My heart is full of gratitude and thankfulness.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Sherwood

  • Art Activism: Using Art to Make Social Change

    Funded Feb 28, 2022

Thank you all for your help! Our students are very excited to begin the printmaking process. And thanks to you, they will have quality supplies and a great experience learning how to create change with art activism. Art "speaks" about social awareness, change, and advocacy for things that impact young people. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about various cultures and the differences between people and their thoughts. We have students from all over the world. It's amazing to hear my students' concerns and issues while working during art class and at our after-school "Kindness Club." I can't wait to tell you and share the amazing things that will happen in our "Kindness Club." Thanks to you for the huge difference you've made! Please stay tuned to pictures, smiles, and loads of thanks from the middle-schoolers at Gold River Discovery Center. Thanks to you all, and know we appreciate you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Sherwood

Students missing almost two years of in-person learning has been detrimental to the social growth of our students and negatively impacted the culture of the school community. Our school is committed to diversity and educational justice for all of our students. However, students have suffered dramatically in the development of their social skills. To repair and change attitudes, we hope to develop middle school ambassadors who understand and can help teach empathy and kindness skills. The "Kindness Club" will provide teens and tweens with the opportunity to build a positive school community that reflects empathy, compassion, and kindness. I want students to learn to embrace problems of relevance within their world, which is one of the studio art habits of mind. Students will learn to create works that convey ideas and a feeling of personal meaning. Students will use Posca pen markers on their sneakers to create messages and art reflecting warmth and kindness. The sneakers will share messages throughout the campus that support and help create a positive school community. Students will also learn to build collective capacity and have courageous conversations that interrupt implicit and explicit racial and gender issues, as well as all inequities. An afterschool club known as the "Kindness Club" will be the forum for discussing and learning about the acceptance of all people. The ability to discard stereotypes and bias to help create a school community of passion and empathy in which all people belong. To engage students in the process and share the message of kindness, students will create and design sneakers as their first project. The sneakers will contain messages of kindness and inclusion for all students. Materials that include paints and tape to paint the sneakers are needed to support creating art and kindness messages.
