Hand lenses are an inexpensive must and the simplest form of a basic microscope. Creating magnified images will assist my fifth-grade scientists in understanding the interaction of a community of organisms within its environment. Students will be able to more clearly categorize the functions of their student-built ecosystems' producers, consumers, or decomposers to make observations, compare with text-based diagrams, or sketch free-hand. My scientists will enjoy greater ease of discovery to identify evidence of reproduction in the soil and/or water - something easily unseen or overlooked with the naked eye. When my scientists deliberately "disturb" or pollute their healthy but fragile ecosystem with rock salt, acid, or fertilizer a hand lens will enhance their ability to discover how the pollutants interact with a healthy environment and closely observe its effects. The effects on the stability of their ecosystems will generate solutions to minimize or even alleviate the effects of pollutants.
