My students get to read a few books on their own every day, and they can pick a spot in the classroom to sit down with their new books. Usually, all of my students like to go on the carpet, but there is not enough room since we practice distancing. This means only a few students get to use the carpet in the front of the room, and the other students have to find a new place to sit.
While it may seem as though finding a place to read is a simple task, to my kindergarteners, it does impact their focus. Having a reading spot will keep them less distracted, so they can focus on the book. This will improve their ability to identify uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as understand how words in a sentence have spaces (RF.K.1 Reading Standards: Foundational Skills). Students will also have the tools they need to review proper sight words and practice forming letter sounds on their own (RF.K.3 Reading Standards: Foundational Skills).
The carpet will go in the back by the other bookshelves, and the magnetic holder will supply their phonics cards. The storage unit will hold their sight word books that they switch out in their own reading baskets, and the books and storage bins will all go on the bookshelves. The caddies will hold extra pencils and crayons for when we do our anchor chart ideas after reading a book, and the students draw/write what happened in the book during the beginning, middle, and end on a sticky note. Small cushions will be used on the carpet to offer flexible seating. This donation will go a long way to help my students stay on the path of learning to love books while being safely distanced.
