Many students including mine are struggling with presenting, reading, and working in front of the class. In helping my students with CCSE.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.4 and 5.5 ELA standards I have come up with a plan. Since our students have lost more than a year of in-person learning due to Covid, they have also lost time for social development that naturally occurs in the classroom. The idea is for those students who are struggling (and those who are not) to present, read out loud, and show their work in front of the class without having them be the center of attention. Students will be able to use an iPad to create a presentation, a video read out loud, and even show how they solved math problems. Using apps like LightMV to make and edit their own videos for individual or group presentations and Splashtop, which would give students remote access to a classroom projector to show work and strategies from their own desk can be highly valuable. The lesson I have created will start with an introduction of both iPad and apps functions. Students will prepare a presentation on any topic, each student will be given two weeks to complete their presentation throughout the year. Students will also have two days to conference with the teacher before the presentation. I am looking to build my students’ confidence, to ease them into public speaking and presenting. Public speaking can significantly boost one's confidence. Overcoming the fears and insecurities that accompany public speaking can be empowering for students to find their voice. Furthermore, connecting with audiences and classmates can be a strong reminder that they have valuable ideas and opinions to share.
