A Little Sensory Help, Please?
Funded Dec 16, 2024My student's and I would love to thank you for your generosity. As you can see, they are being put to good use. They ask so nicely to use the headphones and sensory fidgets. It helps so much to keep them focused on their lessons. Again, thank you so much for your generosity. They frequently ask for the fidgets, so they don't get frustrated. One student used the headphones during a fire drill, so he didn't get agitated from the noise of the bell. He was focused on the way out of the building and able to move quickly. We can never thank you enough.”

The World is Better in Color!
Funded May 18, 2024My students have been super excited about writing on color projects. We started with some creative writing for Halloween. Next, will be writing for Thanksgiving. It made them happy that they got to choose between two different creative writing projects. They didn't acknowledge the excitement was over the color pictures on the paper, but I could tell, that got their creative juices flowing.
My students may not be the best spellers, but they come up with the best ideas. The one writing prompt was if you were a ghost, what kind of ghost would you be. Would you scare people or be a friendly ghost. Would you stay at a house or travel around. The room was silent as they began to write. I played calming music to help them be more creative.
Thank you so much for your help in reaching this goal. It is hard to motivate students that struggle to learn. Small adjustments make a huge difference.”

We Have Outgrown Our Furniture!
Funded Feb 3, 2024My students got so excited when they saw the new tables! They sat down and said how tall the tables were. Then then kept rubbing the table top and spoke of how smooth the tables were. Finally, I got them focused on their work and we were off on our learning journey. These students don't expect new things. They truly appreciate what you have done to make their environment much more comfortable.
With the old table, students had little room for all their books & notebooks they needed during a reading lesson. Now, they can spread out and easily move from workbook to notebook to text book. Thank you again for your kindness.”

Headphones for Struggling Readers
Funded Dec 11, 2022Thank you so much for donating to Mrs. Alvarez class project: Help students to learn to read with headphones. This project has helped at least 13 students, and more are due to join our class. I have seen great improvements with spelling and phonics. My students are not in love with the computer program that the school district of Philadelphia provides us to use. They don't want to listen to and practice something that doesn't come easily. My student now are working on their own levels and able to do this all at the same time due to the headphones.
Our old headphones had the foam liners falling off. This would keep some of my ADHD students distracted for most of the class period trying to reattach those liners. I began to think they were removing them on purpose so they could keep from doing the lessons! So, again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your generous donation.”

A Cozy Reading Space
Funded Feb 10, 2022I wanted to show you a few photos of some of my students that are now enjoying the cozy corner. There are 2 other chairs as well as 2 other foot stools, but we are in a temporary classroom environment that doesn't have the room our classroom has. We hope to be back in our room when the class that is borrowing our room has their heater fixed. We are waiting for the part to come in presently.
Our temporary room is small but we really love to finish our lessons so we can spend time in the chair looking through books. Some students have let it slip that they are trying to get detention so they may have time in the comfy chair. Mrs. Alvarez quickly spoke with the homeroom teachers to find time they may be rewarded to come spend time reading in that chair without losing their recess.
Now our comfy chair is attracting some of the teachers that like to come visit our little room during their planning time. This has an added benefit of teachers seeing how some of the special education students learn and are more active learners with a positive incentive offered for working well with others.
Again, thank you so much for helping my students have a comfortable environment to slow down and take a moment to look at a great book. We really appreciate you!”

Mrs. Alvarez
