I am inviting you to Empower Young Lives Through Literacy by providing reading leveled books and fun, targeted instruction materials. Your decision to fund this project will impact a whole community of kindergarten through fifth grade students at a rural, southern Michigan school. Having recently finished my Master of Arts in Reading degree, this is my first year as their Literacy Specialist. My roles are to determine which students need intervention to improve in reading, administer sessions of targeted instruction, and monitor their progress. I provide intervention in small groups of four students for 25 minutes at a time, and we focus on sight word knowledge, building reading skills, and incorporating writing to enrich the students’ interaction with words and literacy.
With additional materials for my intervention sessions, struggling readers will increase their word knowledge and build foundational skills for reading and writing. Sets of relevant, leveled readers will engage our struggling readers. Using simple, manipulative objects such as magnetic letters will engage both the mind and senses to inspire learning. Sight word games will sharpen focus and determination. These materials will empower my intervention sessions and accelerate the growth of reading skills in our struggling readers.
During the pandemic, students have lost valuable in-person learning time and had little access to books at their reading levels. Now that we have returned to the classroom, student reading levels are as much as two grades behind. Therefore, targeted intervention groups organized by students’ reading scores are critical for individual reading growth in order to be ready for the next grade level. Please consider doing your part to support children becoming confident and capable independent readers, because readers achieve more success!
