I would like to purchase a color laser printer for my students to print their projects and showcase their work with a professional flair. Many products, like resumes and designs, are useful for career applications or portfolios for post-secondary education programs. Students enrolled in these three classes, Food and Nutrition, Adult Responsibility, and Child Development, have the opportunity to work on creative projects in which they apply content area skills. The Adult Responsibility students develop a Vision Board focusing on goals, including short term and long term goals. Their final board includes an image of what they want their life to look like, including their career, personal development, family, and social development. Students will be able to print their final Vision Boards and share them in a gallery walk with other students’ work.
In our Careers unit, students develop a resume and cover letter after researching careers that suit their personalities and strengths. With the color printer, students will be able to print more attractive versions of their resumes and share them with potential employers or post-secondary schools.
In the Personal Finance Project, students research and select cars, homes, and insurance for their selections. Students create folders of products, including sample W-2 forms, paystubs, personal checks, etc., based on their individual research. The skills developed in this project have real-world applications.
Students in Child Development research appropriate toys for children and evaluate the ways in which their selections develop motor and cognitive skills. In their final projects, students generate lists of prospective toys, identify the types of motor or cognitive skills addressed, appropriate age ranges for users, and the strengths and weaknesses of the developmental elements the toys present. The laser printer would allow them to print out their projects.
