The 5th grade students have been learning about color theory since kindergarten beginning with the primary colors. They are always amazed by the new colors they can make. In the past, they have experimented with color mixing and have made beautiful paintings on paper. For our next project this year, I would like my graduating 5th grade students to experience what it is like to create a painting using professional art materials and tools like a canvas board and easel. They have seen and been through a lot these past two years with Covid. They have had to grow up a bit faster then we would like. My students personally have a lot to say and express. They use sketch books to collect information, to sketch new ideas, and to plan their future projects. Using professional tools like a canvas board and an easel would mean that their ideas and skills are taken seriously. It would also prepare them for middle and high school. Knowing how to use these tools may give some children the extra confidence to sign up for art classes when they get older.
