  • Choose to Include

    Funded Dec 28, 2022

The students have absolutely loved using the materials in our classroom. Children with disabilities are playing with their peers a lot more frequently. The calm down area has been a major success. After some practice and modeling, the children are entering the calm down area independently to regulate their emotions.

The children were so excited upon receiving the materials. Each day, one material was introduced and it's been a joy and pleasure watching the children use them independently. The next steps for my students are to extend their language while using the materials and to engage in more back and forth conversations.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Attenberger

  • Is It Recess Time Yet?

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Thank you so much for your donations! With your donations, my class was able to work on the critical social and emotional skills during outdoor and indoor recess. It was amazing to watch the students cooperate and work together while playing soccer, or building a floor puzzle indoors on a rainy day. The students were so excited about the new materials that when they first were delivered we discussed how to store and take care of them so that they would last all year. The students designated a special bin for our outdoor recess materials and indoor recess materials. We even had to create a classroom job for someone to carry the recess materials when transitioning outside. I have not only been amazed at the teamwork the students have displayed while using these materials, but the care they demonstrating while using them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Attenberger

Every student's favorite time of the school day is recess. Some of the most creative and memorable moments for the students in my inclusion classroom have happened while at recess. I have personally observed my students help their peers, use their imagination, demonstrate problem solving skills, use negotiation skills, and interact and play with each other in a meaningful way to them. This year, recess looks different with Covid-19 protocols. My classroom rotates where they play during recess to limit interaction with other classrooms. We are either in the classroom, in a field, on a basketball court, or on a playground. These recess materials will foster students in engaging in cooperative play during recess time without relying on the playground. Recess time is an opportunity for my students to develop critical life skills such as conflict resolution and teamwork. Floor puzzles promote perseverance as well as working cooperatively. Balls and mitts promote cooperation and sharing. All of these materials promote crucial communication skills, that become fundamental, lifelong, personal tools. I have seen the magic that can happen during recess time and I am hoping to foster these social and emotional skills even more with these materials!
