I am excited to share how my students would benefit from the donated items for our new STEAM class! We start by trying to solve a problem, for an individual or on a larger scale…for humanity. We imagine how we could make it better. Students devise a plan and then start building. For example, with the many plastic bags in most all communities, we read about the problem in an African village, plastic bags were killing the livestock. Each student took a plastic bag to re create it into something usable instead of just throwing them away. Students invented a horse halter, vest, and a pencil pouch just to name a few. We read a literature story about a turkey trap, students used paper, marbles and a few legos to build a maze to catch the turkey. After the build, students try out their creation. Many times it doesn’t work as planned, just as in real life. Students then redesign or make adjustments and try again! After students have designed their product, then they present it to their audience. These 21st century skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity, are extremely important to prepare students to be resourceful and productive citizens in society.
