I have been an English teacher for 25 years, and I am starting a Crochet, Knitting, and Yarn Craft Club at my school. The club would emphasize how yarn crafting reduces stress and anxiety while improving focus and concentration. Students will be able to improve math and reading skills, develop critical thinking, and learn to problem-solve. The club will foster positive social behaviors and provide an opportunity for student mentoring across social groups and grade levels. Students will build hand-eye coordination and small motor skills as they learn to crochet and knit. They will feel a sense of accomplishment and pride as they build their crafting skills. The ultimate goal, once students achieve proficiency, is to eventually give back to the community through craft donations such as chemo caps for cancer patients, lap blankets for pediatric patients, and hats and scarves for those in need. The Crochet, Knitting, and Yarn Craft Club will focus on the social-emotional benefits of crafting, both in what it can do for the crafter and what it can do for recipients of the crafters’ creative efforts. Students can take part in the #HatNotHate anti-bullying campaign and contribute to Warm Up America as well. Thank you for anything you can donate to help our students help others.
