An electronic drum kit in my music classroom will allow my students to collaborate and create, perform, and connect with their peers in a positive, engaging manner. After more than a year in virtual isolation, students are hungry for a chance to connect with their peers. I can facilitate this desire for community in a positive way. What is a better way to support students' social and emotional needs than through collaborative music-making? As a music educator, I use my special place and privilege to guide young people to this end. In addition to the collaboration and community this resource would bring to my classroom, it will help my students in other ways. Many students drawn to music have various learning styles. A drum kit would allow those who need movement to express themselves in a positively powerful way. I have some students attending school virtually, while others are unexpectedly quarantined for days or weeks at a time. An electronic drum kit can be recorded directly into a computer program without multiple microphones, mixers, and other sound processing equipment. The electronic audio files can be sent directly to students at home in real-time. They can continue to engage in the music-making process through accessible web-based digital audio workstations. Student learning need not be interrupted by absence from the classroom.
