Communication impacts every area of academics which is why speaking and listening has it's own academic standards. Students who struggle with communication skills have difficulty understanding directions. Visual communication boards help students to understand and follow directions. Colored ink is valuable for making these communication boards. Communication boards/schedules can be reusable when laminated and velcro allows words and pictures to be moved around. Communication boards help students with limited expressive language to express their wants and needs, thoughts and ideas. Laminated surfaces are easier to clean so that germs are not shared between students. S/L.3.1 Craft projects such as making Valen-slime engage students and help them to learn to follow directions and collaborate with their peers. Sharing ideas during a project provides students with experiences and increases their vocabulary. S/L.2.6.
