As a high school counselor I have consistently seen how students are struggling overall with their mental health. They need a place at school where they can come to decompress, relax, find peace, and leave in a better head space. We know from basic education classes that if their basic needs are not being met their learning will be inhibited. With a more flexible seating option in my office (bean bag and office chair), they can feel comfortable for a time period that will enable them to refocus when they return to the classroom. Additionally, there are items that they can use to help them refocus with fidget items and/or coloring items meanwhile there will be essential oils pumped into the office to breath in. Sometimes students need to be reminded to be kind to themselves so we can write positive affirmations (sticky notes) or be given an inspirational quote card they will take with them. Or some can even be used in small group lessons to establish a plan or to-do lists. The candy will be used as incentive to encourage positive behaviors. I've already noticed that when students ask for some candy in my office that I can say "when you finish your credit retrieval class" or "when you don't have a tardy for an entire day". They come back to tell me what they have done and I can congratulate them with their choice of candy and positive words from me. There is a need for storage items to organize the materials I need along with being organized with things going on with students. With mice issues, candy needs to be stored in airtight containers. And with the fidget, coloring and more items, baskets are needed to put items in overall on my bookshelf in the office.
