My Boston Public Schools students have one-to-one Chromebooks, which creates so many amazing learning opportunities; at the same time, without headphones to use with the Chromebooks, we are not always able to fully utilize this resource.
In my humanities class, we watch a lot of videos about the world, in order to immense ourselves in other places and cultures. As a teacher, I know that students flourish when they have more choice in what they do, so I often provide options for students during every class. For example, I might give them an article to read and a choice of three videos to watch, and allow them to choose which assignment they work on first. This can become much more difficult if 25 Chromebooks are playing different videos out loud all at the same time. It would make a huge difference if students had headphones. The whole classroom environment would be more conducive to learning, and allow me to continue empowering students through choice and a variety of multimedia materials.
Additionally, having headphones with microphones will allow my students to share their voices with the world, recording their thoughts and ideas and verbally. This will provide so much benefit to us. For one, allowing students who are learning English the opportunity to express themselves verbally is a crucial element of language development. Allowing for voice-recorded answers is also a necessary step towards equitable education for students who have learning disabilities. Finally, this opportunity will allow us to really get creative with some projects we have coming up; 7th graders will be conducting oral history interviews of people they know with roots in the Caribbean, and 6th graders will be interviewing their family members about the beliefs that shape their moral code, creating an oral account of their reflections.
