Many students are overlooked during an instructional year and weakened emotional wellness is an unfortunate side effect of this. Coping mechanisms are needed for both instruction and social emotional learning. In my classroom, I have a moment of mindfulness every morning where I allow the kids to speak on gratefulness, connect with each other and ground themselves. This creates unity and instills empathy within my 4 walls. The addition of an iPad as a new piece of technology will foster engagement and supplement this mindful space by allowing the students to have an opportunity to access podcasts and other preloaded specific materials prior to and during the day's mindful moment. As an instructional tool, the new technology will be used to motivate and encourage students to participate in my daily mindfulness agenda in a hands-on way. Students will be given the ability to select from preloaded meditations and related content and guide a lesson of their choice. By developing this curriculum and adding to the state standards of writing for intent and purpose, individual students will be able to have a chance to play a role in the classroom content by choosing for their classmates the day's focus skill. The iPad will also be used as a reward and incentive for students who are finished and on task.
