In addition to being a first year teacher this year, I decided to join the girls basketball coaching staff at my school. The reason for this is because joining a team allows students to make new connections and build a support system. Participating in athletics drives students' academics. It can really serve as a motivation for students' academic success. One of our challenges however is that many of our students come from low-income families therefore it is challenging for them to gather funds to purchase the proper equipment such as shoes that protect their ankles and kneepads. In addition to this providing students with equipment will better their basketball skills.
