Students can practice many areas of speech and language with arts and crafts, as well as enhance their understanding of classroom content using targeted vocabulary words within the projects. For example, if learning about winter animals, we can enhance that with a craft around a winter animals that ties into the classroom lesson. They can also practice sequencing and problem solving skills, which can benefit narrative skills later on, such as what comes first, next, last, etc. Many students with language delays or disorders benefit from visual supports to understand and develop new language skills. Having visual cues, such as a social story, a visual schedule, a sequencing strip, can benefit many students in understanding what is expected, what comes next, what the new vocabulary means, etc. The colored ink, software, and paper all are required to create these visual supports.
