These materials will be utilized to support students in their emotional coping and processing of adverse events in their lives, so that they can be successfully present for academic engagement during the school day. I will be leading classroom instruction, individual/small group instruction, as well as after school opportunities for students to engage in creative modalities of emotional processing. Drawing on concepts from art therapy and grief/loss therapy, my lessons will aim to provide students with spaces to build skills in caring for themselves and their personal emotional needs. Through various forms of creative expression, students will experience the freedom to choose which modality feels best for their emotional processing, providing them with a greater sense of agency in their journey of coping. Many of my students have not been introduced to opportunities to engage in creative expression for the purpose of emotional processing and connection. The chance for my kids to experience these options and develop curiosity and awareness is something that truly excites me! My hope is that the interests and insights gained from creative expressive opportunities will remain with my students, and be something that they can continue to utilize outside of instruction time and in their daily lives.
