Our students often have a hard time regulating their behavior due to difficulties with sensory processing. When this happens, we try to encourage our students to take a break and use some coping strategies to calm down. Currently, we have designated a classroom as a sensory room for students to visit and calm down, however due to a shortage of extra funding, we have had a difficult time stocking that room with sensory items that would help the students self-regulate. The program on our campus recently grew from only 4 classes of students with behavioral needs to 10 classes. We now have about 120 students in our program that would benefit from having these items and equipment available to them daily. Another way we support these students is through positive behavior intervention and supports (PBIS). Our students work hard to earn tokens throughout the day. At the end of each week, the students can trade in these tokens for tangible items as a reward. Many of our teachers use their own money to buy rewards, and it is a huge financial burden for them. If the school could set up a store and have some items stored to refill it each week, that would be extremely motivating for the students and ease the burden on our teachers. The goal of the program is to help these kids gain the skills they need in order to regulate their behavior and return to general education and be successful with their general education peers. Having some additional supports to help the students self-regulate in the sensory room and items to motivate the students would be an amazing gift and benefit to our entire campus.
