This project will allow students to demonstrate their gifts, talents, ideas, and abilities in new and exciting ways. Our belief in educating our diverse and underprivileged students is that not all will excel in the academic domains of learning, but that doesn't mean they are not gifted and/or talented. Some need to be given different, less structured, more creative opportunities to display their abilities. This project will help support ALL of our elementary students, giving them the opportunity to engage in MakerSpace activities.
This project will allow students to demonstrate their gifts, talents, ideas, and abilities in new and exciting ways. These materials will also serve as opportunities for our gifted and talented identification team to observe all students prior to our identification process beginning, giving us the chance to notice stand-out students who may not perform well on standardized assessments. These STEM building materials: Bristle Blocks, DigitBlocks, Goobis, Magnetic Tiles, Clip Connects, Plus Plus blocks, Brain Flakes, Straw Constructors, Origami Paper and different strategy games including iTrax, Rubiks Cubes, Color Code, Match Madness, & Mental Blox will be set out and available during whole-group MakerSpace sessions many times throughout the year for all K-6 students to explore. This gives all students the opportunity to be seen, heard, and noticed--not just those who 'get' academics.
This project is especially important to us, because we serve a large population of non-English speakers or English learners. Not only can language be a barrier for these students, but they also often do not have the same experiences as other kids when they come to school. This can make typical educational activities difficult for them. We believe that this project will push us to the next level in being able to give students the chance to demonstrate their abilities to problem-solve and think creatively.
