Our Tiniest Humans need to move and wiggle throughout the day! When they are given a chance to move and learn they are achieving so much more than content. Together they may be working on literacy activities, but more importantly social skills (sharing, taking turns, respect, and being safe in a world with Covid). These tiny humans were so young when the pandemic started that they missed out on so many opportunities to play and talk with other kids. They need opportunities to move and work together for their literacy and social development. In our classroom students have the opportunity to choose activities and self pace themselves. Some students will be working on their computers, while others are moving about through literacy centers. Headphones are a necessity for students on computers to focus on their computer based learning paths.
While students are making independent choices or doing computer based learning, I am free to work with students on additional practice and enrichment. In order for my tiny humans to successfully choose and complete independent activities, they require visual cues as most of them are non-readers. The Cricut will provide a way to label (using pictures and words); the activities, materials needed, and directions, so they can be self-directed in their learning/play/social development. The additional center materials will offer students more choices for literacy activities. I wanted to offer flexible seating that will help students be more comfortable and motivate them to stay focused during centers as well. My students are always on the move, having floor cushions is just another opportunity for them to continue to move their body, so their brain can focus on the learning activities. Through literacy centers my tiny humans are learning to cooperate, share, communicate, problem solve, and self-direct their learning.
