Most of our students at our school have never even seen or heard a pianist, or touched a real piano. This year none of my students (22 this year) even have a keyboard or piano at home. Since I am a pianist, I have a digital keyboard in my classroom! Today I played on the piano pieces by two living women composers..."Autumn Glow" by Martha Meir and "Starlight" by Mary Leaf. I played the two songs while they completed their silent reading in class today. They loved it!
The children are always asking me "May I please play your piano?" and of course I say "Yes!" as I look on and guide them. They love music. I am also the music specialist.
Our school is in the middle of the desert, between Fallon and Hawthorne, Nevada inside Mineral County. Our school is the only elementary school and only school on the sacred grounds of the Walker River Paiute Indian Tribe in Schurz, Nevada. Our town is so small, we don't have a traffic light, a restaurant, a grocery store, or a bank. We do have a coffee shop, and the owner's children attend my school and are in my class.
Music education is very new to them, and I play classical music often while they study and complete homework. We have pop music playing when we clean up, but they children are fascinated by my full size digital keyboard. The small portable keyboards I have selected for Donors Choose are light and battery operated so the children K-6th can put them right on top of their desks. I can teach them how to program the keyboard for different and fascinating tones, different multicultural-style rhythms, and songs. I know their music enrichment and education would greatly benefit from these keyboards.
