After spending two years learning at home and online, students have come to me and expressed concerns that they need practice with self-regulation and maintaining their emotions. We had a class meeting and I asked them what struggles they were having and then asked what they felt they needed to be successful. The materials in this project will be used to help students remain in the classroom while also creating a space for emotional regulation. Being in sixth grade in a "normal" year is hard enough, but coming back after surviving a pandemic creates a unique challenge for adolescents. As an educator, I strive to not only teach my students the content they need to become critical thinkers, but I also want to teach them the skills they need to cope in this unpredictable world. As a way to cope in the classroom, my students wanted to create a "calming corner" where they could go to self-regulate, calm down, and compose themselves. The bean bag, fidgets, and coloring books will all be used in this corner. The fidgets and coloring books will allow my students to calm down and refocus. The plastic containers will help keep our classroom organized and a place where all students can learn. By having the corner in the classroom, the students have a space to practice self-regulation while hearing the lesson being presented.
