The use of math manipulatives will help my students all year with all 7th grade standards. It will also help us with applying some of the standards of mathematical practices. This year our class has been using discourse to explain their thinking. Having manipulatives will help them model with mathematics (CCSS.MATH.PRACTICEMP4) and give them the tools needed to help them make diagrams, double number lines, flow charts, and graphs. So they can analyze those relationships and make conclusions about what we are learning. Teaching the student to use appropriate tools strategically (CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5) is another practice that will be used in our classroom. Letting students explore what tools are available and what tools are the best fit for what they need to accomplish will help them learn what tools and manipulatives are available and which ones are the best choice for what they need to accomplish. I am hoping that teaching my student to use manipulatives during their learning will make concrete examples that can then be moved into more abstract examples later in their education.
