As first graders, my students are still learning how to maintain body control as well as make good choices. With flexible steating my students can work towards being effective in both of these characteristics that make a successful student. Giving students seating options during independent work time and reading time will help them to have more ownership and control of their bodies as well as their learning. Students will be able to pick the seating that works best for how they are feeling at the time. It might be a stand up desk if they have to move major muscle areas or it might be a portable lap desk or cushion seat on the floor so they have the space to stretch and wiggle. Since these flexible seating options are also able to be moved through out the room, students have the opportunity to develop good decision making skills for example- where they sit and by whom they sit. Being able to provide students with the space to spread out allows them to stay more focused on the tasks at hand since they are not sitting close to each other as they would be at the tables we are currently using. In addition, spreading out also creates the distance between students that is recommended. Devising ways for students to feel ownership in their learning creates a more positive and motivating learning environment- providing these flexible seating opitions is just one way that I can provide ownership opportunites for my students.
