As a school counselor here at Hug High School, we have pioneered monthly lunchtime activities that align and promote Social and Emotional Learning. 2-3 times a month the counselors are out during lunchtime promoting skills and awareness surrounding mental health. We like to include creative quick, fun, and hands on activities as well as give-aways for students that tie into emotional management. For example, while teaching coping skills, we may promote several different skills, and then give out coloring pages with coloring pencils to students. If students show us a colored page that is completed in the next week, then they get in a drawing for a prize. For January, my idea is to do goal setting with the students. The metal art making sets and key chains are for the students to choose one word as a affirmation that they want to carry with them through out the 2022 school year. For example a student might choose, focus, kindness, or strength. They have the opportunity to stamp their chosen word on the key chain or dog tag and keep it with them as reminder of their affirmation. Another activity that I want to do this year involving the model magic is creating heart models and figurines for the month of February to promote connection and social support. I also use the model magic as stress relief clay for students that are having a hard time and need something tactile to ground themselves. The standards used are: Self Management standards for HS Health: (7.SM.HS.1, 7.SM.HS.2, &.SM.HS.3)
