Nevada Academic Content Standards are the focus point of all learning in our Accelerated ELA classroom. As professionals we know that it is so much easier for students to learn in an environment that they feel safe in. Our classroom is equipped with desktops, so we are fortunate to be able to do digital work. This also helps my students be able to easily access their work in case they are absent due to COVID-related issues. The only issue is that our classroom does not have a sound system, and our class set of headphones slowly gave out on us since the beginning of the year, so it has been a challenge to introduce a variety of multimedia sources into our reading and writing. It is likely that performance tasks on standardized testing will include videos, so it is important that my students practice performance tasks with different multimedia sources. Additionally, short videos are an excellent way to activate prior learning. A priority of mine has always been to create a classroom that is welcoming for all of my students. In order to do this I have purchased flexible seating options, but the bouncy ball chair and bean bag chairs would help drive this effort. I also have multiple students in each period with ADHD, so the chair bands would help keep them focused throughout the lesson. Finally, I have incentivized standards-based stations by taking polaroid pictures and posting them on our leaderboard. All together, the items in our DonorsChoose list would help my students feel more engaged in classes so they can focus on our priority, which is excellent as scholars.
