  • Environmental Science comes to life with interacting plants and animals!

    Funded Aug 15, 2023

Initially, this purchase included Painted Lady butterfly larvae and grow media (food). Unfortunately, the supplier "CAROLINA BIOLOGICAL SUPPLY" was "out of stock" with these 2 items and sent me a credit that I used for next Unit I teach; Earth's Resources.

    Wonderful news!

Students were able to model what environmental/chemical engineers and Oklahoma Water Resources staff perform with their job duties.

Students performed water testing (from Lake Overholder; the lake that is a 2-minute walk from our school), after we all walked to the lake and secured buckets of lake water.

Tests included (1) total alkalinity (2) turbidity (3) phosphates (4) nitrates (5) pH and (6) dissolved oxygen!

Thank you for your generous donations!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mills

  • From Ocean to the Classroom.

    Funded Feb 10, 2022

As many environmental science state standards require student mastery of modeling, the items being purchased here (hydroelectric paddlewheels, thermohaline circulation kit, a fully functional freshwater aquarium hardware set-up, and a moving Earth/Sun/Moon modeling kit), will all enhance the environmental science learning experience.

A large percentage of my students are English language learners and/or have learning challenges. These students crave and need a hands-on approach to science!

Thank you for making this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mills

  • 2022-2023 Environmental Science Lab Kit Bundle

    Funded Aug 18, 2022

My environmental science students were challenged with designing and building a model car that runs entirely on solar power. Students constructed a prototype vehicle using a standard set of materials and instructions. Then, students tweaked their prototype to create the fastest racing car. Finally, students raced their vehicles in our high school parking lot (on a sunny day).

Students were excited to design their solar car and race against their fellow students.

This activity addresses the following dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards:

HS-PS3-3. Design, build, and refine a device that works within given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy.

Thank you donors for making all of this possible!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mills

  • Water, Soil and Air - We Test Them All!

    Funded Apr 19, 2022

We covered a unit on agriculture in our environmental science class. We learned how delicate and life-saving food crops really are. Drought, flood, tornadoes, earthquakes, lightning, volcanoes, etc. all impact farming and agriculture. We used the sand, silt and clay (from the kits you graciously provided for us) to make a perfect batch of crop-growing loam soil.

We also modeled turbidity, dissolved oxygen measurements from lake water, and BOD oxygen consumption by living organisms in our same nearby lake.

Thank you again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mills

  • Full Biota Freshwater Fish Tank

    Funded Nov 16, 2021

Thank you for the living world aquarium biota! The plants you purchased (Elodea, Water Lilly, Duck Weed) are thriving in their new freshwater aquatic home! Their companions (the pond snails and ghost shrimp) are happy and thriving as well!

Each week, students complete aquarium observation sheets. Students are required to use plastic test tubes and test the aquarium water pH (add a pH tablet to the test tube water, observe the color and match the color to the color chart). Students also test the sink water (that we use for 20% water changes). Other tests that students perform weekly or monthly are:

    (1) gH (Ca and Mg Hardness)

    (2) kH (Carbonate, Alkalinity)

    (3) Temperature (degrees F)

In the Spring of 2022, we plan to introduce an aquatic salamander (axolotl) with further kind financial donations!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mills

Invite students to be the next generation environmental scientists and environmental engineers; or maybe, just stimulate curiosity to be used in any career! We will use clear, plastic pipettes to gather crustaceans, etc. from the fish tank and observe live on deep-well microscope slides. Once observed, the living creatures will be returned to the fish tank for further growth, development, and to complete their life cycles! Predator-prey relationship will happen in real life/real time, as hydra will seek and eat daphnia! Thank you for this wonderful living aquatic world! My students and I are thrilled to know you!
