Art has been fundamental in providing an outlet for students to express themselves emotionally and navigate the struggles they encounter throughout the pandemic. My students had been drawing and painting for an entire year and a half (throughout COVID) and are all eager and excited to learn 3D art! They currently have minimal materials for 3D art construction so we have been incorporating paper mache and found art. The incorporation of a kiln into our art program will allow for 3D art works including glass fusing, jewelry making, and ceramics! This directly addresses the first standard of Art 1: (A)1.1 Create works of art using media, techniques and processes, (A)1.1a Understand and apply a variety of techniques and processes in drawing, digital media and technology, mixed media, painting, design crafts, 3-d sculpture, printmaking, weaving/fiber arts, ceramics, architecture, and photography. It also allows more opportunities to teach the following standards: (A)2.2f: Demonstrate and create with form in works of art, (A)2.6b Describe and explain how artists create works of art with our without a purpose or function, (A) 3.2 Apply basic techniques, skills, and craftsmanship to demonstrate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas in works of art, and (A)5.2a Build critical thinking and problem solving skills while examining and creating works of art using the elements of art and principles of design.
The kiln will allow my students this year, and in years to come, an opportunity for enhanced critical thinking and problem solving though creating 3D art with exposure to an increased variety of artistic media!
Let's get creating!
