I absolutely love being a high school counselor! I enjoy connecting with each of my four hundred students. This year, the time that I have spent with them has revealed that they are struggling. Some are struggling with being back in person, with the return to routine and being around others. And some are finally able to share with me the struggles they experienced while being at home for a year and a half. With these materials, I am hoping to be able to provide students with manipulatives for managing stress, opportunities for artistic expression to get in touch with their inner selves, and a soft, safe space where students can express themselves and decompress. Sometimes students want to come into my office to talk, and sometimes they want to just sit, reflect and calm down. It would be helpful to have these materials to help them create and take their mind off of the things that are troubling them. The counseling department at my school would also like to support and expand school-wide initiatives to support student social and emotional learning with goal-oriented interventions according to the American School Counselor Association standards for a comprehensive school counseling program. The selected books will help us to create our programming, which will hopefully lead to improved outcomes for students in the school environment socially, emotionally and academically.
